Mission: Accepted! U.S. College Admissions Insights
May 1, 2025 (updated: February 20, 2026)
Today is National Decision Day, the deadline for high school seniors nationwide to officially commit to the college or university where they plan to enroll this fall. For most students, submitting an enrollment deposit by May 1 brings months of essay writing, campus tours, and tough decisions to a close. Except for those still waiting on final answers from waitlists, this marks the formal end of the 2025 undergraduate admissions cycle.
This year, several colleges have risen to the top by attracting an extraordinary volume of applications. From coast to coast, institutions saw intense competition for seats in their incoming classes, but none more so than the University of California system. Six out of the eight colleges that received over 100,000 applications this year are part of the University of California system. With its streamlined application process, relatively affordable tuition, and strong academic reputation, the UC system continues to dominate.
But what exactly makes the University of California so appealing to such a wide range of students? Below, we take a closer look at the most applied-to colleges in the United States and explore the factors—academic, geographic, financial, and beyond—that contribute to their massive popularity.
Rather than treating application volume like a quality ranking, this article explains what these numbers mean and how students can use them to build a smarter, more balanced college list for the 2025 cycle and beyond.
2026 Update: While the specific schools on this list may change from year to year, the patterns behind them do not. Highly popular colleges tend to remain popular, often attracting even more applications over time. The strategies outlined here remain relevant regardless of how individual rankings shift.

In recent years, Northeastern's focus on experiential learning, strong placement rates, and location in a city filled with other prestigious universities have dramatically increased its appeal to college applicants.
Colleges rise to the top of “most applied to” lists for many reasons, and selectivity is only one of them. High application volume often reflects visibility, ease of application, and student behavior just as much as academic competitiveness. Schools with strong name recognition, simplified application processes, or broad national and international appeal naturally attract large numbers of applicants, including many who apply without a deep sense of fit.
High volume also changes how admissions offices manage enrollment. When thousands of qualified students compete for a limited number of seats, outcomes become less predictable, and waitlists play a larger role. This can make results feel inconsistent from year to year, even when the applicant pool is strong.
What these numbers do not tell you is whether a college is a good match for your academic interests, whether your intended major is especially competitive, or whether the school is likely to be affordable for your family. Application volume is context, not more, not less.
The University of California system tops this list for several reasons:
Strong academic reputations across diverse disciplines
Each UC campus is recognized for academic excellence, with strengths in fields ranging from engineering (UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC San Diego) to environmental science (UC Davis) to the arts and humanities (UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine). This diversity of offerings attracts a broad spectrum of students, both domestic and international.
Desirable California locations
UC campuses are situated in some of the most attractive areas of the state—from coastal cities like Santa Barbara and San Diego to vibrant urban centers like Los Angeles and Berkeley. These locations offer not only scenic beauty and temperate weather but also proximity to major industries (tech, entertainment, biotech), making them ideal for internships and post-graduate opportunities.
Affordability
As a tax-supported institution, UC tuition remains significantly more affordable than private institutions. The UC campuses are an appealing option for California residents, offering high-quality education at a lower cost. Even for out-of-state and international students, UC schools often provide better value than similarly ranked private universities.
One application, multiple campuses
The UC system streamlines the process by allowing students to apply to all nine undergraduate campuses using a single application. This encourages students to apply broadly within the system, even if they have a strong preference for one or two campuses. As a result, individual UC campuses see high application numbers.
California's large population and extensive education system
As the most populous state in the U.S., California produces thousands of high school graduates each year. Many of these students are educated within the state's robust K–12 school system, which is closely aligned with the specific University of California's subject requirements for admission. This built-in pipeline fuels application numbers from in-state residents alone.
While the eight universities above have surpassed the 100,000 application mark, several others are not far behind. Even in this next tier, California continues to lead: UC Riverside, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Cal State Long Beach, and the private University of Southern California each received over 80,000 applications. Beyond California, schools like the University of Texas at Austin, Florida State University, and the University of Florida are also approaching the "100K Club." These numbers highlight just how competitive—and popular—many large universities have become nationwide.
Many students use these lists as a starting point for their college list, often adding schools because their friends are applying or because the schools are highly popular. We advise against using rankings or popularity as a primary driver of a college application strategy.
Colleges that attract enormous numbers of applicants can still be excellent options, but many of these schools are ultra-reaches. With acceptance rates below 20 percent, they cannot be taken for granted, even for the strongest applicant! When several of your schools fall into this category, outcomes become harder to predict. That uncertainty increases even more if you are applying to a high-demand major, where competition within specific programs can be far more intense than the overall acceptance rate suggests. In these cases, strong applicants can still see inconsistent results.
A strong college list intentionally balances reach schools with targets and safeties (likelies). Alongside highly popular universities, students should include schools where their academic profile aligns well with recent admits, where costs are realistic, and where they would genuinely feel comfortable enrolling. Popularity can add excitement to a list, but predictability is what ensures you have real choices at the end of the process.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
One common mistake is assuming that more applications automatically mean higher quality of education. Application volume reflects student behavior and institutional visibility, not necessarily the undergraduate experience or outcomes within a specific major. Another mistake is treating highly popular schools as safety or likely schools. In reality, these institutions are often among the least predictable, especially for competitive majors and for students applying from outside the state or outside the U.S. A third mistake is ignoring financial fit. Some of the most applied to colleges offer limited aid to certain groups of students, making them unrealistic options even if admission is possible. A college list that does not account for cost is not a reliable plan.
Conclusion
The dramatic increase in college applications reflects a growing trend: today's students are applying to more colleges than ever. Streamlined systems like the Common Application and the UC application have made it easier to apply to multiple institutions with minimal additional effort.
What once required separate forms, essays, and fees for each school can now be accomplished with a few clicks, encouraging students to cast wider nets in their college search. This efficiency, while convenient, has intensified competition across the board. As students regularly apply to ten,15, and even more colleges, distinguishing yourself becomes increasingly essential.
As students plan for the 2026-27 admissions cycle, many of the same colleges are likely to continue receiving extremely high numbers of applications. While the order of the list may change from year to year, the underlying patterns tend to remain stable. Interpreting application volume thoughtfully, rather than chasing rankings, will help students build college lists that are better aligned with their goals.
